The Northwest Side Housing Center (NWSHC) is a HUD-Certified, community-based, nonprofit organization that engages, educates and empowers the community. We accomplish our mission through housing counseling, financial education, community organizing, outreach, advocacy and supportive services.
“Work with residents to respond to the needs and strengthen the community.”
That was Reverend Christine Schrey's founding vision for the Northwest Side Housing Center. In 2003, Rev. Schrey and the Northwest Neighborhood Federation opened the Northwest Side Housing Center (NWSHC) in the basement of Christ Lutheran Church. Since then we have helped thousands of homeowners stay in their homes, buy their first homes, and help better manage their financial situation.
In addition, we have organized and empowered community members on quality of life issues surrounding education, older adults, youth, safety, and housing. The NWSHC has evolved into the lead community agency for Belmont Cragin. We remain committed to Rev. Schrey's vision and have expanded our focus to: community organizing, leadership development, place making, and providing free community programs and services.
community residents are involved and engaged at all levels of our work.
provide quality programs and services that meet the needs of the community

Where does your support go? Every dollar in our budget enables us to respond to the needs of the community.
We are a dedicated team of movers and shakers who live our mission to ENGAGE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the community.
We couldn’t respond to the needs of the community without the generous support of our donors, funders, and partners.
